Gushue Moving Arts

May 6 - 7 at 8pm

Gushue Moving Arts premieres an evening of brand spankin’ new dances, including the NYC premiere of Charles Gushue’s The Augur and The Amateurs. This evening of work has been hollowed by sadness, stuffed with the mundane, and urgently reaches for nothing. Joined by a cadre of performers, GMA fills the theater with embodied memories and infectious dance moves. This new collection of dances explores unbelievable truths, believable lies, and suggests honesty is an irrelevant fantasy.

The University of Michigan School of Music, Theater and Dance, Department of Dance presents:

NEW BEGINNINGS TO THE THE ENDINGS WE ALWAYS WANTED

Step into a world stuffed with meaning, devoid of clarity and urgently grasping at nothing, in The Augur and The Amateur. In SPACE you’ll find yourself swimming in excess, and wading through spectacles that celebrate the gendered body in discernible and indiscernible forms. In SPACE mess is more.

Charles Gushue’s work has been called “grotesquely pedestrian” and “foolishly ambitious.” Inspired by found-footage style horror films, late night dance parties, and a cadre of 80’s videos discovered on youtube. The Augur and The Amateur relies on the meaning making abilities of the audience to make sense of the dance even as it fails to understand itself.

Alterio’s SPACE sees performers struggle through masculine fierceness and feminine butchness, twisting, turning, and exploiting the body for audience and performers’ pleasure to uncover desire. Railing against the divorce of gender and sexuality appearance, SPACE asks how messy can we get?
